Where it came from
The 1000 Ngultrum coin was issued by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan in 2013 to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Bhutanese commemorative coinage often serves as a reflection of the nation's deep commitment to Vajrayana Buddhism, with designs carefully curated to honor both the monarchy and the spiritual heritage of the Himalayan kingdom.
The reverse of the coin features the Thousand-Armed Chenrezig, a manifestation of the Buddha of Compassion, intricately rendered to evoke the traditional thangka painting style prevalent in Bhutanese religious art. By selecting this iconography, the mint highlighted the king's revered status as a compassionate leader, blending state prestige with sacred imagery. The coin was produced as a high-quality collector's piece, intended for numismatists and those interested in Bhutan's unique cultural policy of Gross National Happiness.
