100 Afghanis (World Soccer Italy to USA)

This 100 Afghanis coin was issued by the Da Afghanistan Bank in 1990 to commemorate the international fervor surrounding the FIFA World Cup cycle bridging the 1990 tournament in Italy and the 1994 event in the United States. During this era, Afghanistan sought to participate in global numismatic trends by issuing thematic non-circulating legal tender that highlighted popular international cultural events. The coin serves as a reflection of the period's broader geopolitical attempt to maintain ties with the international community through commemorative coinage.

The design features intricate relief work centered on soccer imagery, capturing the dynamic movement of the sport which was gaining significant traction in Central Asia during the late twentieth century. Created by state-commissioned artists, the piece adheres to the aesthetic standards of Afghan minting at the time, prioritizing symbolic representation of athleticism and global unity. While intended as a collector's item, it is noted by numismatists for its historical role in documenting the intersection of Afghan state identity and worldwide sporting culture.
