Where it came from
The 2003 1000 Ngultrum coin was minted by the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the reign of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck. It stands as a significant piece of Bhutanese numismatics, reflecting the kingdom's tradition of producing high-denomination commemorative coinage that bridges traditional Himalayan iconography with modern precious metal minting techniques.
The design features the portrait of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, whose reign was defined by his philosophy of Gross National Happiness. The coin's aesthetic incorporates intricate patterns inspired by Bhutanese textiles and sacred architecture, intended to honor the King's contributions to the nation's modernization and cultural preservation. It was widely received by collectors for its elegant composition and the historical importance of the monarch it depicts.
