1⁄12 Shilling - George V

The 1/12 shilling, often referred to as a penny, was minted for the Bailiwick of Jersey during the reign of King George V. These copper coins were issued to facilitate small-scale daily transactions on the island, maintaining a link to the British imperial monetary system while serving the specific needs of the local Jersey economy. The 1931 issue reflects a period of consistent design within the British Commonwealth coinage series, characterized by practical utility and standardized metallic composition.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of King George V, designed by Sir Bertram Mackennal, whose portrait was the standard for coinage across the British Empire during this era. The reverse typically displays the shield of Jersey, honoring the island's unique status as a Crown Dependency. These pieces were mass-produced for circulation rather than collectors, intended to endure the rigors of frequent exchange in marketplaces and shops throughout Jersey.
