Where it came from
The 1937 1/24 shilling coin was issued for the Bailiwick of Jersey during the first year of King George VI's reign. These coins were minted as part of the island's unique currency system, which historically maintained a complex relationship with British sterling while utilizing specific regional denominations. This particular issue was struck in bronze and intended to serve the practical needs of daily commerce in the Channel Islands.
The obverse design features the effigy of King George VI by T. Humphrey Paget, whose portrait was widely utilized across the British Commonwealth during this era for its balanced, regal aesthetic. The reverse displays the traditional shield of Jersey, reflecting the island's distinct identity and heraldic heritage. These coins were received as standard circulating currency, though they are now primarily held by numismatists interested in the regional variations of twentieth-century British coinage.
