Where it came from
The 2008 Sir Douglas Bader 5-pound coin was issued by the Bailiwick of Jersey as part of the Flying Legends series. This collection was minted to commemorate iconic figures in aviation history and the pivotal role of Royal Air Force pilots during the Second World War. The choice of Jersey as the issuing jurisdiction reflects the island's historical significance as part of the British Isles that endured occupation and played a strategic role in regional defense.
The coin features a portrait of Sir Douglas Bader, the distinguished fighter ace who famously continued to fly despite the loss of both his legs. Designed to reflect a blend of commemorative prestige and numismatic detail, the series was produced to meet the standards of collectors seeking high-quality silver proof specimens. It was received by the numismatic community as a thematic tribute to 20th-century heroism, highlighting the technical and artistic focus on portraiture characteristic of late-Elizabethan commemorative coinage.
