Where it came from
Issued by Jersey in 2024, this five-pound commemorative coin was struck to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the Allied forces who participated in the liberation of Normandy during the Second World War, a mission that held particular significance for the Channel Islands due to their own wartime occupation.
The design features a poignant, coloured illustration depicting Allied troops arriving on the beaches, set against the portrait of King Charles III. Created within the tradition of British commemorative coinage, it aims to balance historical solemnity with modern minting techniques. It was released as part of a series intended for collectors and veterans' families, receiving attention for its vivid application of colour on a precious metal base.
