Where it came from
This 2018 Australian 2-cent coin is a numismatic commemorative piece issued by the Royal Australian Mint. The 2-cent denomination was officially withdrawn from general circulation in 1992, making this proof issue a special release intended for collectors rather than daily commerce. It features the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by artist Raphael Maklouf, which depicts the monarch wearing the George IV State Diadem and was used on Australian currency from 1985 until 1998.
The decision to produce this piece as a silver proof reflects the Mint's focus on honoring historical currency designs that are no longer in circulation. By utilizing silver for a proof strike, the Mint elevates a utilitarian object into a fine collectible, appealing to enthusiasts of Australian decimal history. The design remains faithful to Stuart Devlin’s iconic frill-necked lizard reverse, which has served as the definitive imagery for the 2-cent coin since decimalization in 1966.
