Where it came from
The 2007 Australian 20-cent silver proof coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of Surf Life Saving Australia. Founded in 1907, the organization has long been an iconic part of Australian coastal culture, dedicated to drowning prevention and beach safety. This specific numismatic release served as a tribute to the volunteer lifesavers who have patrolled the nation's beaches for over a century.
The reverse design features a stylized depiction of a surf lifesaver standing on a beach, clutching a rescue reel, a tool synonymous with the early history of the movement. Designed by Vladimir Gottwald, the imagery aims to evoke the heritage and selflessness of the surf rescue tradition. As a silver proof striking, the coin was intended for collectors and enthusiasts, distinguished by its polished background and frosted relief, marking a shift from the standard cupro-nickel circulation coins.
