Where it came from
The 2017 two-dollar coin, featuring the Battle of Vimy Ridge, was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the centennial of this pivotal First World War conflict. Released as part of a broader series marking the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, the coin honors the Canadian Corps' victory in April 1917, an event widely regarded as a formative moment in the country's development as an independent nation.
The design, created by artist Tony Bianco, features the Vimy Memorial, which serves as a poignant symbol of the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers. The coin reflects the Mint's commitment to historical remembrance, utilizing both traditional engraving and selectively applied color on the circulating version. It was received by the public as a meaningful collector's item and a respectful tribute to those who served, frequently appearing in circulation alongside standard commemorative currency.
