Where it came from
The Royal Australian Mint issued this 20-cent coin in 2008 to commemorate the International Year of Planet Earth, an initiative proclaimed by the United Nations to promote the importance of geosciences. This fine silver proof issue was struck to serve as a high-quality collector's piece, reflecting the numismatic tradition of marking global scientific observances through precision minting.
The coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, a design widely adopted across the Commonwealth during this era for its dignified realism. The reverse design captures thematic elements related to the Earth sciences, focusing on geological and environmental awareness. As a proof strike, it is defined by its polished fields and frosted relief, intended to highlight the intricate details of the engraving for collectors of commemorative Australian coinage.
