Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent coin featuring a Magna Carta design was minted to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215. Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, the piece highlights the historical significance of the document as a foundational influence on the development of democratic legal principles and the rule of law within the Commonwealth.
The reverse side of the coin features an intricate design by Royal Australian Mint designer Aleksandra Stokic, who incorporated elements symbolizing the parchment and the royal seal of King John. The obverse depicts the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The issue was intended as a functional circulating coin while also appealing to collectors interested in constitutional history and significant legislative milestones.
