Where it came from
The 1998 Masterpieces in Silver collection was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1938 Florin. This series serves as a tribute to Australia's numismatic heritage, specifically honoring the 'Coat of Arms' design originally commissioned for the 1938 issue. By reimagining these historical designs in a proof-quality silver format, the Mint aimed to provide collectors with a refined interpretation of classic Australian currency aesthetics.
The 20-cent piece within this set features the obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which was introduced to Australian coinage in 1998. The reverse design maintains the historical integrity of the original 1938 florin's heraldic imagery, skillfully adapted to the dimensions of the modern 20-cent coin. The set was well-received by the collecting community for its focus on preserving archival design elements while utilizing contemporary minting technologies to achieve high-relief detail.
