20 Cents - Elizabeth II (4th Portrait - Masterpieces in Silver - 1927 Florin)

The 1998 Masterpieces in Silver 20 Cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as part of a commemorative series celebrating the history of Australian coinage. Specifically, this piece honors the 1927 Canberra Florin, a coin originally minted to commemorate the opening of Parliament House in Canberra. This modern iteration reflects the mint's ongoing commitment to numismatic heritage by reinterpreting iconic designs from Australia's early federation years for contemporary collectors.

The obverse features the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which was introduced across Australian coinage in 1999 but appeared on select commemorative issues shortly prior. The reverse design serves as a faithful homage to George Kruger Gray’s original 1927 work, capturing the regal heraldry of the period. The series was designed to showcase high-quality finishes, utilizing sterling silver to distinguish these pieces from the standard circulating currency of the era, and it remains a staple for collectors of twentieth-century Australian commemorative sets.
