Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent coin featuring Sir Henry Parkes was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the bicentenary of his birth. Known as the 'Father of Federation,' Parkes was a pivotal figure in Australian colonial politics and the primary architect behind the movement to unify the separate colonies into a single nation. The design was produced as part of a broader commitment by the Mint to honor key historical figures instrumental in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia.
The reverse design features a portrait of Sir Henry Parkes, reflecting the formal aesthetics typically employed by the Royal Australian Mint for commemorative circulating currency. The obverse depicts the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had been the standard for Australian coinage since 1999. The coin entered general circulation, serving as a functional piece of legal tender while acting as a public educational tool regarding Australia's path to federation.
