Where it came from
The 2015 Australian 20-cent coin featuring the Unknown Soldier was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. This coin serves as a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives and whose final resting places remain unidentified. The design was produced as part of the broader Anzac centennial program, intended to honor the spirit of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and the enduring national memory of the conflict.
The reverse of the coin was designed by Royal Australian Mint artist Wojciech Pietranik. The composition features a poignant depiction of the Unknown Soldier’s grave, framed by the stark silhouette of a soldier standing in remembrance. It reflects a somber, respectful aesthetic that contrasts with the standard platypus design of the Australian 20-cent circulation series. The coin was widely distributed into circulation, allowing it to serve as a tangible, daily reminder of national history for the general public.
