Where it came from
The 2011 Australian 20-cent coin featuring the Ashes trophy design was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the historic cricket rivalry between Australia and England. Released as part of a broader series celebrating significant cultural and sporting milestones, the coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the tradition of the Ashes, an urn that symbolizes the test match competition played between the two nations since the late 19th century.
The reverse side of the coin, designed by artist Wojciech Pietranik, features a detailed representation of the Ashes urn set against a background of cricket stumps. Pietranik, who is well known for his contributions to Australian coinage including the Sydney 2000 Olympic series, aimed to capture the gravitas of the trophy. Upon its release, the coin was well received by sports enthusiasts and collectors alike for its sharp relief and its role in documenting a pivotal aspect of Australian national identity.
