Where it came from
Released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2019, this twenty-dollar coin honors William 'Billy' Bishop, Canada's top air ace of the First World War. Issued as part of a series celebrating significant figures in Canadian aviation history, the coin commemorates the centennial period of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s foundational history and the legacy of Bishop, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his combat achievements.
The coin features an intricate design by Canadian artist Glen Green, who chose to depict Bishop in his flight gear alongside his Nieuport 17 fighter aircraft. The engraving highlights the technical details of the aircraft and the determined expression of the pilot, aiming to balance historical accuracy with the numismatic artistry characteristic of the Mint’s fine silver commemorative series.
