Where it came from
The 2008 Australian 20-cent piece was issued as part of the International Year of Planet Earth, an initiative supported by the United Nations to promote the importance of geological sciences. The reverse side of the coin, designed by artist Vladimir Gottwald, features a stylized representation of the earth’s continents and geological themes, celebrating the scientific contributions of the Year of Planet Earth program within the context of Australia’s ongoing commemorative coinage series.
The obverse of this circulation coin features the fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. This design, introduced in 1999 and used on Australian legal tender until 2018, depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The coin was produced by the Royal Australian Mint and remains a common piece within the Australian decimal currency system, serving both as a functional unit of exchange and a modest commemorative acknowledgment of global environmental awareness.
