The reverse design featuring the iconic beaver was created by G.E. Kruger Gray, a renowned British artist known for his work on numerous coins across the British Empire. His rendition of the beaver, which had previously appeared on Canadian nickels starting in 1937, was intended to evoke the wilderness and the foundational role of the fur trade in Canadian history.
