Where it came from
The 2023 20-dollar coin featuring the Mi'kmaq Creation Story was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of an ongoing series celebrating Indigenous legends and cultural heritage. This specific coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the First Nations of the Atlantic region, drawing upon the oral traditions of the Mi'kmaq people to share their account of the origins of the world and the role of the creator figure, Glooscap.
The coin features artwork by Mi'kmaq artist Loretta Gould. Her design utilizes vibrant colors and traditional aesthetic elements to translate complex spiritual narratives into a tactile, metallic medium. The Royal Canadian Mint commissioned this piece to foster greater awareness of Indigenous perspectives within the Canadian national narrative, receiving appreciation from collectors for its commitment to authentic representation and its use of advanced color-application techniques on fine silver.
