Where it came from
The 2020 20-dollar fine silver coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (V-E) Day. It serves as a numismatic tribute to the conclusion of the Second World War in Europe, recognizing the contribution of Canadians who served both overseas and on the home front to secure the Allied victory in 1945.
The coin features a design by artist David A. Oram, who utilized a poignant black-and-white aesthetic to evoke the era of the 1940s. The reverse depicts a scene of jubilation, inspired by historical photographs of civilians celebrating in the streets, while the obverse bears the effigy of King George VI, the reigning monarch at the time of the war, as a deliberate nod to the historical context of the victory.
