Where it came from
The 2018 20 Dollars Elizabeth II coin, colloquially known as The Cunning Cougar, was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of their ongoing series celebrating Canadian wildlife. Struck in fine silver, this piece serves as both legal tender and a collectible numismatic item, reflecting the Mint's commitment to high-relief artistry and intricate finishes. It was issued to honor the cougar, a formidable apex predator native to the wilderness of North America.
The design features the work of Canadian artist Glen Loates, who focused on capturing the predatory grace and intense gaze of the cougar in its natural habitat. By employing a combination of selective coloring and detailed engraving, the Mint sought to provide a three-dimensional depth that emphasizes the texture of the animal's fur and the alertness of its posture. The piece was well-received by collectors for its technical precision and its role in broadening the narrative scope of the Mint’s wildlife-themed releases.
