Where it came from
The 25 Dram coin featuring David of Sasun was issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 1994 as part of the first series of national currency following the country's transition to the dram. These coins were minted to establish a sense of national identity and sovereignty, replacing the Soviet ruble with symbols of Armenian heritage and folklore.
The design highlights the legendary epic hero David of Sasun, a central figure in Armenian mythology who symbolizes the nation's resilience and struggle for independence. The motif typically depicts the hero on his horse, Kurkik Jalali, reflecting the historical reverence for the epic poem, which was recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance.
