Where it came from
The 2.5 Euro coin featuring The Lord of the Rings was issued by the Central Bank of Malta in 2022. This commemorative piece was released as part of the bank's numismatic program to celebrate cultural and literary themes, specifically highlighting the enduring global impact of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy trilogy. The coin serves as a bridge between traditional Maltese numismatics and the international phenomenon of fantasy literature, capturing the imagination of collectors who appreciate the intersection of high-fantasy aesthetics and legal tender.
Designed and illustrated by the artist Noel Galea Bason, the coin reflects a commitment to detailed relief work that characterizes Malta’s commemorative issues. Bason focused on iconography evocative of the series' lore, aiming to balance the formal requirements of a sovereign coin with the intricate visual language associated with Middle-earth. Upon its release, the coin was received with notable enthusiasm by both fantasy enthusiasts and coin collectors, who noted the precision of the minting process and the novelty of the theme in European commemorative currency.
