Where it came from
The 25 Leva coin was minted by the Bulgarian National Bank in 1989 to commemorate the upcoming 16th Winter Olympic Games held in Albertville, France. Bulgaria had a long-standing tradition of issuing commemorative coinage to celebrate international athletic events, and this piece was designed to foster national pride and support for the Olympic movement during the late socialist period.
The design features traditional Olympic motifs including winter sports silhouettes and the Olympic rings, rendered in a style typical of Bulgarian commemorative coinage from the era. These coins were primarily distributed to collectors and international numismatic markets, serving both as a souvenir of the Games and as a symbolic gesture of Bulgaria's participation in global sporting culture.
