Where it came from
Released in 2011 as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's 'Birthstones' series, this 3-dollar coin was designed to offer a commemorative numismatic piece centered on the month of January, represented by the garnet. The series was created to appeal to collectors interested in personalized gifts and astrology, with each monthly issue featuring a stylized design that incorporates a Swarovski crystal element to mimic the corresponding birthstone.
The reverse design was crafted by artist Maurice Gervais, who integrated floral motifs characteristic of the month alongside the crystal inlay, while the obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. As a non-circulating legal tender piece, it was minted in sterling silver, reflecting the Mint's strategy of producing themed, collectible bullion items that emphasize aesthetic detail and craftsmanship over standard monetary function.
