Where it came from
The 2011 three-dollar coin featuring the aquamarine stone was part of a broader series issued by the Royal Canadian Mint celebrating the months of the year, each highlighted by a corresponding Swarovski crystal birthstone. These coins were designed to appeal to gift-givers and commemorative collectors, moving beyond standard bullion to integrate decorative elements that reflected personal milestones. The series utilized the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, which has been a staple on Canadian coinage since 2003.
The coin features an intricate floral design surrounding the aquamarine crystal, representing the March birthstone. The Royal Canadian Mint aimed to blend traditional numismatic standards with jewelry-inspired aesthetics to broaden the appeal of their collector coins to a non-traditional audience. Upon release, the series was received as a novel approach to thematic numismatics, though it sparked internal debate among traditionalists regarding the integration of non-precious materials into official legal tender.
