Where it came from
The 2017 three-dollar coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a defining moment in Canadian history that occurred during the First World War. Released as part of Canada's 150th anniversary celebrations, the coin serves as a tribute to the soldiers who fought in the 1917 offensive, which is often viewed as a pivotal step in the development of Canadian national identity.
Designed by artist Laurie McGaw, the coin’s reverse features a poignant depiction of the Vimy Ridge Memorial, focusing on the iconic limestone sculptures that symbolize the country's sacrifice. McGaw’s design emphasizes the solemnity and architectural grandeur of the monument, capturing the spirit of remembrance. The coin was minted in sterling silver, reflecting the Royal Canadian Mint's standard for commemorative numismatic pieces intended for collectors and history enthusiasts alike.
