Where it came from
The 2011 3 Dollars 'October - Tourmaline' coin was released by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of the 'Birthstones' series. This collection was designed to celebrate monthly birthstones, reflecting a broader trend in numismatics where bullion and collector coins incorporate semi-precious stones to appeal to gift-givers and those interested in astrology. The series was minted in sterling silver, featuring a central Swarovski crystal element to represent the tourmaline, the traditional birthstone for October.
The coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, as designed by Susanna Blunt, whose portrait has been a staple of Canadian coinage since 2003. The reverse design focuses on the aesthetic representation of the birthstone, blending traditional minting techniques with contemporary decorative embellishments. Upon release, the series was marketed primarily toward the collectible and gift market, emphasizing the cultural significance of birthstones rather than traditional monetary circulation.
