3 Euros (Hawaiian Bobtail Squid)

The 3 Euro Hawaiian Bobtail Squid coin was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2024 as part of the 'Color Vision' series. This series is celebrated for its innovative use of vibrant, glow-in-the-dark color applications on a base of copper-nickel, designed to highlight the fascinating biological features of various animals. The choice of the Hawaiian bobtail squid reflects a growing interest in marine biology within numismatic circles, specifically highlighting the creature's unique symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria.

The design was crafted by the Austrian Mint’s expert engraving team, who focused on capturing the intricate texture of the squid's mantle and its distinctive, compact appearance. The coin serves both as a legal tender instrument in Austria and as a decorative collector's piece, consistent with the mint's tradition of producing thematic coins that appeal to both naturalists and numismatists. It was met with positive reception for its technical execution and the atmospheric effect created by the luminescent finish.
