Where it came from
The 3 Euro 'Microraptor' coin was released in 2022 by the Austrian Mint as the fifth installment in their twelve-part 'Supersaurians' series. This series highlights prehistoric creatures that have fascinated both the scientific community and the general public, celebrating the evolution of life on Earth. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the Microraptor, a small, four-winged dromaeosaurid dinosaur known for its significant role in the study of the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds.
Designed by the talented mint engravers at the Austrian Mint, the coin features a color-printed depiction of the Microraptor on its reverse, utilizing advanced minting techniques to bring the feathered creature to life. A unique characteristic of this series is that the coins glow in the dark, an aesthetic choice intended to appeal to younger collectors and those with an interest in natural history. Upon its release, the coin was well-received for its blend of educational value and innovative design, maintaining the high production standards expected of the Austrian Mint's commemorative currency.
