Where it came from
The 3 Zhu coin was introduced by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty in 119 BCE as part of a broader effort to standardize the imperial currency system and centralize economic power. This denomination was intended to replace the disparate local coinages that had persisted since the fall of the Zhou Dynasty, reflecting the Han government's desire to assert firmer control over the state's financial health during an era of significant military expansion.
The design of these coins features the characters 'San Zhu' (3 Zhu) in seal script, which are notable for being read in reverse order compared to standard conventions of the time. This stylistic choice is often attributed to the rapid and experimental nature of early Han monetary reforms, which saw multiple changes in weight and style before the eventual adoption of the Wuzhu coin, which became the standard for centuries to come.
