Where it came from
The 4000 Réis coin, struck in 1816, was produced at the Rio de Janeiro Mint during the unique period when Brazil served as the seat of the Portuguese Empire. Following the 1807 invasion of Portugal by Napoleonic forces, the royal court relocated to Rio de Janeiro, elevating Brazil's status from a colony to a co-kingdom. This shift necessitated a significant expansion of the mint's capabilities to meet the monetary requirements of the relocated monarchy.
The design features the crowned arms of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves on the reverse, with the bust of Prince Regent John VI on the obverse. This particular specimen belongs to the small crown series, a design choice intended to project imperial legitimacy during a time of geopolitical upheaval. These coins were primarily minted from silver and remain highly regarded by numismatists for their historical significance as tangible artifacts of the transition from colonial dependency to independent nationhood.
