Where it came from
The 3 Zhu coin was introduced in 119 BCE during the Western Han Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Wu. This period was characterized by frequent currency experimentation as the central government sought to curb private minting and standardize the economy. The 3 Zhu denomination emerged as an attempt to transition away from the earlier Ban Liang coinage, bridging the gap toward the eventual standardization of the Wu Zhu coin.
Design-wise, the rimless 3 Zhu is a minimalist example of early Chinese cast bronze currency. It lacks the raised edge common in later standardized coins, making it physically fragile and prone to clipping or filing. The coin was produced through sand-casting, a labor-intensive process that resulted in natural variations in weight and finish, reflecting the state's struggle to maintain consistent monetary control during a volatile fiscal era.
