Where it came from
The 3 Zhu coin was introduced in 119 BCE during the Western Han dynasty under the reign of Emperor Wu. It emerged as part of a series of monetary reforms intended to centralize the currency system and curb the proliferation of private minting, which had caused significant economic instability and debasement across the empire.
This specific denomination was designed as a transitional piece, characterized by the inclusion of a raised outer rim to prevent the practice of filing down the edges of the bronze. While the coin represents the sophisticated transition toward the iconic Wu Zhu currency, it was relatively short-lived in circulation as the central government shifted focus toward the more durable and standardized Wu Zhu design shortly thereafter.
