Where it came from
The 1950 5 Centavos coin was issued by Argentina during the presidency of Juan Domingo Perón, as part of a broader series commemorating the centenary of the death of José de San Martín. San Martín is revered as the Libertador of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and his portrait serves as a national symbol of independence and sovereignty. The coin was produced during a period of significant economic shifts in Argentina, reflecting the government's focus on nationalistic imagery.
The obverse features a profile portrait of San Martín, designed to project an image of stoic leadership and historical continuity. As a circulating base-metal coin, its design prioritized clarity and mass production, meant for everyday use by the Argentine populace. Upon release, these coins were widely distributed across the country, serving as a functional tool for economic life and an enduring reminder of the country's military hero.
