Where it came from
The 1992 5 Centavos coin was issued by the Central Bank of Argentina as part of the Convertibility Plan, a series of reforms intended to curb hyperinflation by pegging the Argentine peso to the United States dollar. Following the demonetization of the austral, this new coinage was designed to restore public confidence in the national currency, with the 5 centavos piece serving as a functional, low-denomination unit for everyday transactions.
The design features the classic portrait of Liberty on the obverse, a motif historically inspired by the French 5-franc coin and common in Argentine numismatics since the late 19th century. The reverse displays the denomination alongside the National Coat of Arms. Struck in aluminum-bronze, the coin was intended to be durable for mass circulation, though its value diminished rapidly over the following decades as inflation returned to the Argentine economy.
