5 Cents - Elizabeth II (3rd portrait; magnetic)

The 1999 Canadian five-cent coin belongs to the era of Elizabeth II’s third definitive coinage portrait, designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. Introduced in 1990, this design marked the first time a Canadian coin featured a portrait of the Queen created by a Canadian artist. De Pédery-Hunt sought to capture a mature, regal likeness of the monarch, moving away from the previous interpretations used by the Royal Canadian Mint.

This specific 1999 issue is notable for the transition in metallic composition toward magnetic steel with nickel plating. As the Royal Canadian Mint moved to reduce production costs and utilize more durable materials, the transition resulted in a coin that was physically distinct from its pure nickel predecessors. While widely circulated and minted in significant volume for daily commerce, it remains a common specimen for collectors interested in the technological evolution of Canadian currency at the turn of the century.
