Where it came from
The 2006 Canadian five-cent coin featuring the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II represents a significant technical shift in Canadian numismatics. This year marked the transition to multi-ply plated steel for circulation coinage, a move initiated by the Royal Canadian Mint to reduce production costs and utilize materials that could be easily sorted by electromagnetic systems in vending machines.
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Susanna Blunt, who was the first Canadian to design a royal portrait for Canadian coinage since 1990. The reverse retains G.E. Kruger Gray’s classic beaver design. This specific issue is distinguished by the inclusion of the Royal Canadian Mint’s logo—a maple leaf inside a circle—positioned below the portrait, which serves as a security mark indicating the use of the new steel composition.
