Where it came from
Released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2020, this coin serves as a tribute to the celebrated Canadian artist Alex Colville, who originally designed the iconic centennial penny imagery in 1967. The coin recreates the beloved rock dove design, which depicts the bird in flight, a symbol that resonated deeply with the Canadian public as a representation of peace and progress during the nation's 100th anniversary.
Struck in one-tenth of an ounce of pure gold, the piece honors the historical significance of the one-cent denomination following the circulation of the last Canadian pennies in 2012. The design maintains the integrity of Colville's original vision while elevating the medium to precious metal, a gesture intended for collectors who appreciate the intersection of numismatic history and Canadian fine art.
