Where it came from
Released in the year 2000 by the Royal Canadian Mint, this five-cent piece was part of a special series of circulating commemorative coins marking the new millennium. The design features the iconic beaver, a long-standing symbol of Canadian industry and history, rendered in a style consistent with the classic nickel design that has remained a staple of Canadian currency since 1937.
The 2000 commemorative nickel was produced alongside other denominations to celebrate the country's collective milestones and diverse heritage. The reverse design was sculpted by G.E. Kruger Gray, whose original depiction of the beaver has appeared on the Canadian nickel for decades, representing the nation's connection to its natural landscape and the historic importance of the fur trade in shaping Canada's early economy.
