5 Cents - Elizabeth II (Golden Jubilee)

The 2003 Canadian 5-cent coin was issued during a transitional period for the Royal Canadian Mint, marking the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. To commemorate her fifty years on the throne, the obverse design was updated to feature the effigy of the Queen created by artist Susanna Blunt. This portrait was notable for its modern, clean aesthetic, as it depicted the monarch without a crown, representing a departure from the more traditional regal imagery used on previous coinage.

This specific coin also signifies a technical shift in Canadian numismatics, as 2003 was the year the Royal Canadian Mint began transitioning away from the use of the 'P' mint mark, which had previously denoted the use of plated steel. The design, featuring the iconic beaver on the reverse, remained consistent with the long-standing tradition established by G.E. Kruger-Gray in 1937, maintaining a sense of historical continuity while the obverse embraced the contemporary vision of a new royal era.
