Where it came from
The 2002 Canadian five-cent coin, featuring the Vimy Ridge Memorial on the reverse, was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint as a commemorative piece. It marked the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a defining moment in Canadian history during the First World War. The design serves as a solemn tribute to the Canadian soldiers who fought and fell in the 1917 conflict, grounding the nation's contemporary identity in the sacrifice of its ancestors.
The reverse design features a depiction of the Vimy Ridge Memorial, specifically the 'Canada Bereft' statue, illustrating the somber grace of the monument located in France. The obverse displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. This commemorative edition was widely circulated alongside standard coinage, making it a familiar piece for collectors and the general public alike, intended to foster national remembrance through the medium of everyday currency.
