Where it came from
The 2000 Five Dollar Basketball coin was minted by the Royal Australian Mint as part of the extensive numismatic program commemorating the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Released in the lead-up to the event, this series was designed to celebrate the spirit of international athletic competition and to capture the excitement surrounding Australia's hosting of the Games. It served as both legal tender and a collectible keepsake intended for a broad audience of sports fans and numismatists alike.
The design features a dynamic depiction of a basketball player in action, emphasizing the energy and precision of the sport. It reflects the thematic consistency of the Sydney 2000 collection, which utilized various artistic interpretations of Olympic events to foster national pride. Upon its release, the coin was well-received by collectors for its polished finish and its role as a tangible marker of a significant moment in Australian sporting history.
