Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2006, this silver proof coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Duyfken in Australia. The ship, captained by Willem Janszoon, is widely recognized as the first European vessel to reach the Australian continent, anchoring off the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula in 1606. This coin serves as a historical marker for that early maritime encounter, highlighting a significant moment in the exploration history of the Southern Hemisphere.
The coin features an intricate design by Wojciech Pietranik, a celebrated artist noted for his contributions to Australian numismatics, including the designs for the 2000 Sydney Olympic medals. His work on this piece emphasizes the seafaring heritage of the Duyfken, capturing the vessel with period-appropriate detail. The obverse displays the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, maintaining the standard aesthetic for Australian legal tender issued during this era. The proof finish was crafted to appeal to collectors, showcasing a highly polished background against a frosted, raised design.
