Where it came from
The 2016 five-dollar coin commemorating the month of July was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of a twelve-part series celebrating birthstones. Each coin in the series was designed to feature a genuine Swarovski crystal representing the specific month, with the July edition utilizing a ruby-colored stone to symbolize passion and vitality.
The reverse design features an intricate floral arrangement by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais, paired with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt on the obverse. The series was intended for collectors seeking personal keepsakes, utilizing a proof finish on sterling silver to enhance the contrast between the floral artistry and the embedded crystal. Upon release, the series was well-received by thematic collectors for its consistent aesthetic and accessible precious metal content.
