Where it came from
The 2016 five-dollar coin featuring the August birthstone was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of a twelve-coin series celebrating the monthly birthstones. This series was designed to provide a collectible, personal memento for gift-giving, with each issue incorporating a genuine Swarovski crystal to represent the birth month. The August edition specifically honors the peridot, a gem known for its vibrant green hue, set against a backdrop of a stylized floral design representing that month.
The coin was struck in sterling silver and reflects the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing commitment to high-precision engraving and aesthetic appeal in their numismatic products. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, a design that has been a staple of Canadian coinage since 2003. Upon its release, the series was well-received by collectors who appreciate thematic, accessible bullion-adjacent coins that balance artistic design with symbolic value.
