Where it came from
The 2016 Austrian 5 Euro coin was minted to commemorate the New Year's Concert performed by the Vienna Philharmonic. This annual event is a global cultural touchstone, held in the Musikverein's Golden Hall, and the Austrian Mint issues these coins to celebrate the enduring legacy of Viennese classical music and the orchestra's role in the international cultural landscape.
Designed by Helmut Andexlinger, the coin features a delicate balance between musical motifs and Austrian national identity. The obverse depicts the stylized emblem of the Vienna Philharmonic, while the reverse showcases the dancers and musicians emblematic of the concert's tradition. It was well-received by collectors for its fine craftsmanship and its thematic connection to a specific, globally recognized seasonal ritual.
