Where it came from
The 2016 Austrian 2-euro commemorative coin was issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, which was established in 1816 by Emperor Francis I of Austria to restore the stability of the national currency. This institution played a pivotal role in the economic modernization of the Austrian Empire and eventually served as a founding pillar of the Eurosystem following Austria's adoption of the single currency.
The coin's design features the building of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank in Vienna, flanked by elements symbolizing the stability of the institution and the history of Austrian currency. Designed by Herbert Wähner, the motif aims to reflect the enduring nature of the bank through neoclassical architectural lines, emphasizing its historical gravity. Upon its release, it was well-received by the numismatic community as a sober, elegant tribute to one of Europe's oldest central banks.
